What Is an Ultrasound Skin Scan?

Our diagnostic ultrasound skin scanner uses medical-grade imaging technology to assess the layers of your skin that the naked eye cannot see. In a standard facial consultation, a therapist looks at your skin’s surface. We look deeper.

In a single scan, we can assess:

  • Hydration levels — how much water is present in the dermis versus the epidermis
  • Skin barrier health — whether your protective barrier is intact or compromised
  • Collagen density — how much structural support remains in your skin
  • Subcutaneous fat distribution — facial volume and where it may be diminishing
  • Pigmentation — activity beneath the surface before it becomes visible

Most skin concerns have their origin beneath the skin’s surface. Dehydration, thinning, crepey texture and premature ageing are all deeper-level processes. Treating only what you see often addresses symptoms while missing the cause.

What Happens During the Scan?

The scan takes approximately 10–15 minutes and is entirely comfortable. A small ultrasound probe is gently moved across the skin surface. You will be shown the real-time imaging as we scan. Your therapist will explain what we see as we go.

The scan is followed immediately by your consultation, during which we translate the findings into a personalised skin plan and treatment recommendation.

Does the scan hurt?

No. It is completely painless and non-invasive. It feels similar to the ultrasound scans used in medical settings — a cool gel is applied and the probe is gently moved across the skin.

What is the difference between this and a regular skin analysis?

A regular skin analysis assesses the surface of the skin — texture, tone, visible pigmentation. Our ultrasound scan assesses the dermis and subcutaneous layers — structures that surface analysis cannot see. This allows us to detect collagen loss, deep dehydration and barrier compromise before they become visible problems.

Do I need a scan before every treatment?

A full diagnostic scan is performed at your first visit. On subsequent visits, we reassess your skin and track changes over time, adjusting your treatment protocol accordingly.
